Note: John Grisham was born on February 8, 1955, in Jonesboro, Arkansas. He earned a law degree from the University of Mississippi in 1981 and practiced law for nearly a decade, specializing in criminal defense and personal injury litigation. He served in the Mississippi House of Representatives from 1983 to 1990. Grisham began writing A Time to Kill in 1984, inspired by a trial he witnessed, but it was rejected by 28 publishers before a small press published 5,000 copies in 1989. His breakthrough came with The Firm (1991), which spent 47 weeks on the New York Times bestseller list and was the best-selling novel of 1991. Nine of his novels have been adapted into major films including The Firm, The Pelican Brief, The Client, A Time to Kill, The Chamber, The Rainmaker, and The Runaway Jury. Skipping Christmas was adapted into the film Christmas with the Kranks.
